App guide

New to Custom Quick Chats? Run the Setup Wizard from the tray menu to get started.

Basics

  • Custom Quick Chats allows you to send custom messages from your controller and/or keyboard while you game.
  • The app runs from the Windows system tray. You can double-click the tray icon to open the Edit Quick Chats page.
  • Triple-click the tray icon to open Controls / Keybinds.
  • Four clicks open Options. Five clicks open Updates.
  • Custom Quick Chats and the overlays only work while your game is the active foreground window.

Sending a quick chat

  • Under Controls / Keybinds Chat Controls, bind Chat Keys to match your game's Public, Team, and Party chat keys (Rocket League defaults are often Y, U, and T).
  • Bind each Chat Trigger direction under Controller Triggers or Keyboard Triggers — use whichever input you play with.
  • Primary chats: press two Chat Trigger directions (usually on the D-pad) in a row — for example Left, then Up.
  • Secondary chats: hold, single-press, double-press, or triple-press your Secondary Menu binding first (set under App Controls), then press your first and second Chat Trigger directions.
Tip

For Rocket League, unbind in-game quick-chat bindings on directions you use here so the game and this app do not both send messages.

Tray menu (right-click the icon)

  • Enabled checkbox — turn Custom Quick Chats operations on/off without closing the app.
  • Next Preset — switch to the next customized preset in your list.
  • Switch Chat Type — cycle between Public, Team, and Party chat types (only if enabled).
  • Controls / Keybinds, Edit Quick Chats, and Options open the main setup pages.

Controls / Keybinds

Open Controls / Keybinds from the tray menu.

App Controls

  • Secondary Menu — opens your secondary quick-chat menu messages.
  • Enable/Disable App — turns Custom Quick Chats on/off without closing the app.
  • Chat Type Toggle — cycles between Public, Team, and Party chat (enable only the types you want).
  • Cycle Preset — moves to the next enabled preset in your list, wrapping at the end.
  • Next Preset — switches one preset forward in your list.
  • Previous Preset — switches one preset backward in your list.

Presses can be set to Hold, Single Press, Double Press, or Triple Press for added flexibility. Each action has separate Controller Shortcuts and Keyboard Shortcuts tabs.

Chat Controls

  • Chat Keys — set the keys your game uses for Public, Team, and Party chat. These must match your in-game bindings.
  • Public chat key — match the key that opens public all-chat in your game.
  • Team chat key — match the key that opens team chat only.
  • Party chat key — match the key that opens party chat only.
  • Cycle Toggles — include or exclude each chat type when cycling. At least one chat type must stay enabled.
  • Controller Triggers — Up, Left, Right, and Down map to the four directions on the chat wheel (usually your D-pad).
  • Keyboard Triggers — bind keyboard keys to trigger custom messages the same way.

Game Session Counter (hotkeys)

  • Unlock hotkey — arms the win/loss counter on the overlay so you can enter adjustments (default: + and − together).
  • Commit hotkey — confirms your entry and updates the score. See Game Session Counter below for the full in-game flow.

Edit Quick Chats

  • The grid is 4×4 per menu: Primary and Secondary menus, four category rows, four direction columns — up to 32 messages per preset.
  • Presets are separate message sets — click to edit, drag to reorder, use the checkbox to enable or disable.
  • Recall Preset Shortcut — click Listen on a preset and press a keyboard key or controller button. In-game, that shortcut jumps to that preset.
  • Give two or more presets the same shortcut to cycle only those presets.
  • If a Recall shortcut uses the same key as Next Preset, Previous Preset, or Cycle Preset, the Recall shortcut takes priority.
  • Mode (per preset): Switchable follows your Public/Team/Party tray toggle; Public/Team/Party force that chat for every message; Custom lets you set Public, Team, or Party per message.
  • When a preset mixes chat modes, the overlay status shows CUSTOM and the chat mode type is not switchable.
  • Right-click in the preset area to Create New Preset, Save as New Preset, Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, or Delete presets.
  • Double-click a preset name to rename it.
  • Import — adds presets from a file to your list without replacing your current presets.
  • Export — saves selected presets to a file (or all presets if none are selected).
  • Print — prints a reference table of the selected preset’s messages.
  • Reset All to Defaults restores every preset to factory Rocket League messages.

Game Session Counter

  • Tracks a running win/loss net score for your game session. Shown on the Game Bar overlay when enabled.
  • Turn the win/loss Game Session Counter overlay on or off from Options.
  • Set hotkeys under Controls / Keybinds Game Session Counter.

In-game flow:

  1. In-game, press the Unlock hotkey. The overlay arms and shows your current net score with "..." after it.
  2. Once armed, press + for a win or − for a loss. Type the number you want to adjust the score by.
  3. Press the Commit hotkey to apply (default: Enter). Esc cancels. Entering 0 applies no change.

Options

  • First Press Timeout — how long the on-screen chat menu stays open between direction presses.
  • Sound chimes — audio cues when an app operation is used in-game. Toggle each chime and adjust volumes individually.
  • Choose between Dark and Light theme for the Custom Quick Chats app.
  • Toggle on/off the win/loss Game Session Counter Game Bar overlay.
Tip

If two-direction combos misfire, increase First Press Timeout a few hundred milliseconds and test again.

Overlay

Xbox Game Bar widgets — highly recommended but not required for sending chats.

  • Overlay widgets show app status, custom message menus, and the game session counter.
  • The overlay widgets are automatically installed with Custom Quick Chats.
  1. Ensure Xbox Game Bar is installed on your PC.
  2. Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
  3. Check to make sure Compact Mode is off. Settings Compact Mode set to off. Pinning widgets is not available in Compact Mode.
  4. Click the Widget Menu (the icon with the four squares) in the top menu bar.
  5. Look for the three Custom Quick Chats widgets in the list and open each of them.
  6. Once they’re open, click the pin icon on each so they stay visible while you’re playing.
  7. Reposition them on screen to your liking, then press esc to exit the Game Bar.
  8. Launch your game and the widgets should appear once your game is in the foreground.
Tip

If Game Bar looks different from the setup video and you cannot pin widgets, Compact Mode is on. Press Win+G Settings turn Compact Mode off, then pin all three Custom Quick Chats widgets.

Tip

If mouse clicks aren't working on your desktop where widgets were pinned, press Win+G, click the mouse icon on the Game Bar home bar, and turn Enable click-through on.

Backup/Restore

  • Every save creates a timestamped settings snapshot automatically.
  • Open Backup/Restore from the tray menu to browse backups, open the backup folder, or restore a previous snapshot.
  • Your current settings are backed up automatically before any restore.
  • Select a backup and click Restore Selected, or use Open Folder to view files on disk. Click Refresh to update the list.

Tips for Rocket League

If your game already has quick chat functions like Rocket League does, you will want to unbind in-game quick-chat bindings to prevent duplicate messages from your game and Custom Quick Chats.

For example, in Rocket League you will need to clear the binding controls for each of the four Dpad directions titled:

  • Quick Chat Information/Post Game
  • Quick Chat Compliments
  • Quick Chat Reactions
  • Quick Chat Apologies

Rocket League > Settings > Controls > View/Change Bindings

Ensure that quick chat is enabled in Rocket League:

Rocket League > Settings > Chat > Quick Chat > Allow Quick Chat with Everyone

Troubleshooting

Quick fixes when something does not work as expected.

Common fixes

If something still is not working, try the matching fix below.

Duplicate messages

The game and Custom Quick Chats both reacted to the same input. For Rocket League, unbind conflicting in-game quick-chat keys or clear unused Chat Trigger slots in the app.

Controller not detected

Confirm the controller works elsewhere. For DualShock/DualSense, try WinMM mode or a virtual Xbox wrapper. Check the tray log for the active backend.

Messages not sending

Check Custom Quick Chats is Enabled in the tray, confirm the preset checkbox is on, and verify Custom Quick Chats > Controls/Keybinds > Chat Controls > Chat Keys match your game's chat controls. Make sure your game is the active foreground window. Confirm your license is active and the message slot is not empty.

Wrong chat channel

Public, Team, and Party keys in Chat Controls must match in-game bindings. Disable chat types you do not use so the cycle skips them.

Combos misfire or feel too tight

Increase First Press Timeout under Options — this controls how long the on-screen chat menu stays open between Chat Trigger presses.

Overlay not showing

Install widgets from the tray, enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows, pin widgets with Win+G, and press Win+G once after updates.

Game Bar looks different / cannot pin overlay widgets

Xbox Game Bar Compact Mode is on. Compact Mode looks like a full Xbox-style menu instead of a top bar with floating windows, and it does not allow pinning. Press Win+G → Settings → turn Compact Mode off. Then open the Widget Menu (four squares), open all three Custom Quick Chats widgets, and pin each one.

Desktop clicks blocked where overlay was pinned

Press Win+G → mouse icon on the Game Bar home bar → Enable click-through. Pinned widgets can block clicks even when invisible until click-through is on.

License / activation errors
